Wi-Fi Motion Radar

Last Updated: January 27, 2026

🔒 Privacy-First Guarantee

Wi-Fi Motion Radar is designed with privacy as the absolute priority. This app does NOT collect, store, transmit, or share any personal data. All processing happens entirely on your device. There are no servers, no analytics, no tracking, and no third parties involved.

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Wi-Fi Motion Radar ("the App", "we", "our") handles information. The App is an experimental motion detection system that uses Wi-Fi signal strength analysis to detect movement. This policy is designed to help you understand our commitment to your privacy.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

To be absolutely clear, the App does NOT collect, store, or transmit:

3. How the App Works

The App operates entirely on your device using the following process:

  1. Wi-Fi Scanning: The app uses Android's WifiManager API to scan for nearby Wi-Fi access points and read their signal strength (RSSI)
  2. Signal Processing: RSSI values are processed using statistical algorithms (mean, variance, standard deviation) to detect fluctuations
  3. Motion Detection: When signal variance exceeds a calibrated threshold, motion is detected
  4. Local Storage: Calibration data and recent events are stored locally on your device only

All of this processing happens on your device. There is no network communication, no cloud processing, and no data transmission.

4. Required Permissions

The App requires certain Android permissions to function. Here's exactly what each permission is used for:

ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION

Why Required: Android considers Wi-Fi network information (SSIDs and BSSIDs) as location data. Starting from Android 8.0, apps must have location permission to perform Wi-Fi scans.

How We Use It: We use this permission ONLY to access Wi-Fi scan results. We do NOT:
  • Access GPS or location services
  • Track your location
  • Store location history
  • Determine where you are

ACCESS_WIFI_STATE

Purpose: Allows the app to read Wi-Fi connection state and access scan results.
Usage: Reading RSSI values from nearby access points.

CHANGE_WIFI_STATE

Purpose: Allows the app to trigger Wi-Fi scans.
Usage: Requesting periodic Wi-Fi scans to obtain fresh RSSI data.
Note: This does NOT enable/disable Wi-Fi or change your connections.

NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES (Android 13+)

Purpose: Modern permission for Wi-Fi scanning on Android 13+.
Usage: Same as Wi-Fi permissions above.
Declaration: Explicitly marked as "neverForLocation" in the app manifest.

5. Local Data Storage

The App stores minimal data locally on your device:

Important: All stored data remains on your device and can be cleared by:
  • Uninstalling the app
  • Clearing app data in Android settings
There is no backup to cloud storage and no way to recover this data once deleted.

6. Third-Party Services

The App does NOT use any third-party services, including:

  • ❌ No analytics services (Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics, etc.)
  • ❌ No crash reporting services
  • ❌ No cloud storage or backup services
  • ❌ No social media integrations
  • ❌ No payment processors
  • ❌ No user authentication services

7. Network Communication

The App does NOT communicate over the network. It does not make HTTP requests, does not connect to servers, and does not transmit any data over Wi-Fi or cellular networks.

The only "network" interaction is passively listening to Wi-Fi beacon frames broadcast by access points, which is how all Wi-Fi devices operate normally.

8. Children's Privacy

The App does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under the age of 18 (or any other age). Since we collect no data at all, the app is safe for users of all ages.

9. What We Can and Cannot See

What the App CAN See:

  • SSIDs (network names) of nearby Wi-Fi access points
  • BSSIDs (MAC addresses) of access points
  • RSSI values (signal strength in dBm)
  • Wi-Fi channel/frequency information

What the App CANNOT See:

  • Network traffic or data transmission
  • Passwords or encryption keys
  • Who moved (person, pet, object)
  • Where movement occurred (no localization)
  • Identity of individuals
  • Visual appearance (no camera access)
  • Sounds (no microphone access)

10. Security

Since the App does not collect or transmit any data, there is minimal security risk. However, we implement the following practices:

11. Your Rights and Control

You have complete control over the App:

12. Experimental Nature & Disclaimer

Important: This is an experimental application for educational and research purposes. It is NOT:

  • A security or surveillance system
  • Guaranteed to work in all environments
  • Suitable for critical applications
  • A replacement for professional motion sensors

The app demonstrates Wi-Fi sensing principles but has inherent limitations and may produce false positives or miss actual motion.

13. Changes to This Policy

If we make any changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Since the app does not collect data and has no update mechanism, we recommend checking this page periodically if you have concerns.

Material changes will be communicated through app store update notes.

14. Contact Information
